do waves have to exist in something?

Actually anything varying in sinusoidal form with respect to time and position can constitute a wave; a=A×sin (kx-wt+d).

Mechanical waves need a medium to exist. But Electromagnetic waves are caused by variations in Electric and Magnetic fields so they dont need a medium.

Similarly the wave that describes an electron (the Schrödinger wavefunction/wave equation) also does not need a medium to exist simply because electrons don't need a medium to exist themselves

I think that this definition of wave is stronger? Waves are actually transmission disturbances or energy through matter or not through it but without the displacement of matter itself. This means that waves could have any graphical representation if it is a function of the form f(kx-wt)=f(x,t). This function could take the form of an exponential function, a straight line or any other one too but must depend on these parameters and be able to express it in terms of sine or cosine function summation(which we know can be done with fourier series-as it can express any graph).

"Sabiya", do not consider electron as a wave or a particle, actually its neither. In fact, some of electron's properties (/behaviour) can be described by considering it a wave and some by considering it a particle. Electron is "electron", neither a wave nor a particle. So the wave that describes electron is not real wave like EM wave but a probability distribution (/probability wave) which is an abstract concept, so the questions like "does it exist?" makes no sense.

Guys, what is that you actually mean by no medium? Is that a vaccum? Here's something interesting. There's nothing like 'vaccum'. Refer the quantum fields theory and GR. Space-time is an object and there's always energy content (simply 'particles') in it, since there are always fields corresponding to them. For each field, there's a rival (like position and momentum in uncertainty principle). Take electric and magnetic field. If electric field tries to be zero, magnetic field doesn't let it to be. Similarly electrons need something called Higgs field for them to have mass. For charge, I don't know. So I strongly disagree with the claim that the wave function of electrons don't need 'medium'.
